Dear Diary,

Today we went to visit grandpa side, not far from grandma’s side.  Upon arriving I noticed a lot of animals and crops.  They farm chickens, sweet potatoes, rice and many other vegetation.  Also noticed the view.  It’s not breath-taking but it’s simple and somehow I find myself liking it.

I wonder if anyone lives in those houses?

The beautiful view of rural China.

Entrance of my relatives’ home.  I don’t think they’ve ever met a westerner before lol.

Family members prepare food.

Again, just like on my grandma’s side, we did the same ritual.  First you must pray to the Gods then the Ancestors.  It was a hot day so we kept it short.  Since this is a village, they all know we were here to visit and so people would come and greet us.  It’s nice having a small community.  Everyone is very friendly and polite.

Burning a lot of spirit gold and money.

Uncle prepare fire crackers.

Watch Eric light up the fire crackers!!  I had a bit of a shock because I couldn’t see if he lit it or not!  How wonderful that anyone can by fire crackers!  Wished it was legal everywhere so that everyone can have a blast!

Afterwards, I helped grandma do origami.  You can never have enough spirit gold!  But sometimes I wonder whether you even need money in heaven?  My uncle (who is a monk) told me up there you can have anything you want.  So now I ask.. so why would you need money? hmmmmmmmm.  Whatever it is in heaven, Eric and I thought, “Why not burn the latest gadgets instead?.”  Serious question though.  They would also need Internet service! Burn everything!!!

Enjoying the sunshine and peacefulness.

Mum wanted to show me a modern home so we took a short walk to another relatives home but unfortunately they weren’t home 😦

Unfortunately they are not home but this is a modern version of the old homes. Much newer as this family is a little wealthier than the others in the village.

Not to worry because good food awaits!!!  A bit too much food though….

Lunch time! This is only the beginning.. had no idea more food would come!

Hakka Chinese Dabu China

All the food left over!! Such a waste.. everyone is way too full to continue eating!!

The men smoke and socialise with grandma

A live chicken offering from a family member. Having livestock is seen as luxurious as my relatives make little money.

My family’s chicken house. Free range chickens are so yellow! Uncle said they take many months to grow before they can sell it off.

The kids come by for lunch before heading back to school again.

Not long afterwards, we also left leaving my grandma behind for the night and visited my cousin at the hospital.  She had a very smooth labour and gave birth to a healthy baby girl!!  Congratulations ^_^
